Laundry Cart/Rolling Bookshelf

In-between commission projects, we like to create things for ourselves that not only improve our home but make our lives a little easier. This project was dreamt out of the need for a more practical solution for our overwhelming laundry created by a family of six. We have a good basket system but no enclosed laundry room. We stored these baskets all over the dining room and it was obtrusive and made it feel like we were swimming in laundry.

Just like many things we create for our quaint house, this piece needed to be multi-purpose while looking good out in the open. After sketching out several ideas, we decided to go with a design that didn’t look like any typical laundry cart we could find.

So, what do you think? Would you want this in your home?

This cart stands 50.5″ tall, 27″ wide, and 16″ deep and is made from Walnut plywood finished with Danish Oil. It is made to fit two Sterilite 1.5 bushel baskets stacked on each shelf.
The brass bar across the back adds a little brightness and keeps the baskets/items from being pushed off the shelves. The brass screws on the sides match the brass bar but also make the cart where it can be taken apart, stored flat, or shipped easily.
It has locking rolling wheels for easily transporting the finished laundry from room to room.
We made a conscious decision to make the design open and “airy” so it did not look bulky and cheap in our small space. We didn’t want a giant box on wheels.
Best part about it though? It can also be used as a rolling bookshelf! If we ever need some extra display space for a gathering at the house or if we eventually get that enclosed laundry room, we simply take the baskets off and voilà! – A fully functional and pretty piece that can be used in any room!
