Fumed Oak Piano + Computer Desk

One thing I enjoy about making furniture is that each piece is customized and this time was no different. This piano and computer desk was delivered to its home this past weekend to a bungalow on the Maryland coast. Inspired by its Ambrosia Maple Desk predecessor, this desk was created for music and work and it sports a bay of storage drawers.

This desk is 64″ wide x 24″ deep and is pictured here holding a Roland RD-170 digital piano in the full-extension piano storage drawer. The side drawers are equipped with our favorite Blum soft-close, full extension drawer slides. The piano drawer uses four Accuride over-extension slides that not only holds up the weight but allows smooth and secure movement if the drawer is being pulled out or pushed in for storage.

The desk is made from solid white oak and white oak plywood. The desk’s finish is Rubio Monocoat Fumed, which through the coolness of science, turns certain woods gray. We loved how natural the coloring process was and it wasn’t full of fumes, despite the name “Fumed”. After the Fuming process was complete, we applied one of Rubio Monocoat’s 2C oils to create a soft white grain throughout the gray. The finish is really unique and stunning. The desk also has a shelf under the desk to accommodate a computer tower per the client’s request and we think the combination of the drawers and shelves in the storage bay balances really well.

This Fumed Oak Desk houses a full-extension digital piano storage drawer and a bay of drawers and shelves.
The desk’s surface is just over 5ft, allowing for ample work space and flexibility for any project.
The Accuride slides make the movement of the piano smooth and secure whether it’s partially or fully extended.
The storage drawers fully extend for easy use and visibility.
The Fumed details look fantastic on the white oak and make for a unique finish.
